I have a strong feeling that the south is going to leave just as soon as they can, since for obvious reasons they're not terribly keen on staying in a country whose government has killed millions of their people.

A friend of mine who's currently in Ethiopia said that the other day at the embassy he was talking to a U.S. army officer who's part of the U.S. military effort to train southern Sudan's military forces. Apparently the folks in charge of the training are pretty confident in the ability and professionalism of the southern Sudanese they've been training. So if the north does decide to re-start their genocide campaign, they might get a really nasty shock. (Or, alternately, the officer my friend spoke to might have been drastically over-estimating the ability of his charges).
