Oh, yeah. In the olden days, they used to take the criminal prosecution of animals very seriously. They would even appoint counsel to represent the animals, and the animals would sometimes win. I recall a case that was mentioned in law school where villagers sued a plague of locusts who were eating their crops. I believe that the locusts won when their counsel argued that there had been insufficient service of process. All this is I guess perfectly consistent with the worldview that gave us the Cadaver Synod.
